The Brief & Logistical Challenge

Lineworx approached us with a brilliant, highly practical marketing problem. They wanted to showcase their innovative trackside perforated drainage systems at major industry trade shows. However, full-scale precast concrete drainage units are incredibly heavy, dense, and structurally unwieldy.

Attempting to transport real-world concrete assets to busy exhibition centres presented a logistical nightmare, astronomical freight costs, and significant health and safety risks regarding manual handling and stand structural loads on the exhibition floor.

The brief for Funky Lemon was to design a highly detailed, lightweight, and completely safe 1:32 scale display model that could travel effortlessly, bypass the heavy-lifting hazards, and still command attention on the trade show floor. Despite our extensive history of producing diverse models for various commercial sectors, this project marked an exciting milestone for our studio—it is the very first train system we have ever modelled!

The Funky Lemon Solution: Engineering the Trackside Environment

To provide immediate real-world context without the weight of actual concrete and stone, we engineered a lightweight, hyper-realistic cross-section of a modern railway infrastructure:

• The Environment: The display features a sleek, aerodynamic high-speed train, intricate overhead catenary lines, authentic aggregate ballast, and hand-painted miniature track workers outfitted in high-visibility safety gear.
• The Engineering Context: This detailed cross-section illustrates exactly how the Lineworx drainage system sits in the ground to rapidly eradicate pooling rainwater and safeguard track stability—demonstrating how it protects the line without undermining the surrounding ballast infrastructure.
• Modular Product Architecture: The model seamlessly bridges the gap between marketing and technical civil engineering. By presenting a clear, crisp 3D cutaway of the 150, 300, and 600 Series variants, trade show attendees can easily examine the modular stacking configuration of the Base Unit, Intermediate Units, Half Risers, and Tapered Risers beneath the main Cover Unit.

At a busy trade show, safety and presentation go hand-in-hand. By replacing a massive, hazardous block of concrete with a precision-fabricated 1:32 scale model, Lineworx could safely and effectively highlight the system's core commercial benefits:

• Visually proving how the system effortlessly adapts to narrow, restricted trackside areas.
• Creating a tactile, eye-level tool that clearly shows how much easier the units are to inspect and maintain trackside compared to traditional perforated pipes.
